S o many cities around the world claim to be the capital of one thing or another. Luling's claim to fame is watermelon; and they appear prepared to defend their self-proclaimed title of "Watermelon capital of America" with this enormous contraption. It's little more than an imaginatively-painted water tower but still the sort of thing that can startle a person as they drive into town past the vegetable stands selling, of all things, watermelons.. Luling is also home to the Watermelon Queen pageant which has been held on the last weekend of June since 1953. If beauty contests aren't your thing, there's always the Watermelon Thump car rally also held here. And for the truly macho, keep you eye out for the annual watermelon seed-spitting contest.

Rating: Five stars. My 3-year-old son loves "balloony towers". He thinks water towers look like giant balloons! He thinks this one is really cool and wanted me to tell everyone!
