Description by United States Department of Veterans Affairs
T his bronze equestrian statue of the General is mounted on a granite pedestal and a square platform with a bronze soldier at each corner, representing the four branches of the service-infantry, artillery, cavalry, and engineers. General Sherman, one of the great Northern generals of the Civil War, was most noted for his march through Georgia and his capture of Savannah. He commanded the Army of Tennessee and succeeded General Ulysses S. Grant as Commander of the United States Army. Dedicated on October 15, 1903.
