T owers, arches, columns, walkways and steps form a rampart on the eastern edge of Várhegy (Castle Hill) overlooking the Danube River and Pest. From here there are spectacular views of the city and the river valley. The ramparts afford a view that allows you to appreciate the size of the Országház (Parliament) building on the opposite shore. There are several stories about how the structure came to be. One is a virtual fairy tale. Another, more realistic version, is that protection and fortification of the city was divided among the different guilds and organizations at the time, and this was the section of the perimeter the fishermen's guild was responsible for. The most logical, although less interesting, explanation is that there used to be a fish market behind the Bastion, which is above a neighborhood called Fishermen's Town.
