O ne of France's greatest castles, this building lives up to the stereotypes molded into our minds through childhood. Tall walls, ramparts, conical spires on the corners, and more. The original building lacked many of these details, especially the octagonal towers. They were added in the 14th century. The château started as a fortress in the 11th century. It was destroyed in 1067, then rebuilt by the Plantagenents in the 1300's. Later it would become a bastion of the Huguenots, a military barracks, a prison, and finally a museum. Some believe the Chateau's expansion marked the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance.
April, 2001: An outer wall of the chateau collapses, injuring three people. The castle suffers significant structural damage as huge chunks of wall are sent tumbling into nearby homes and businesses. It is believed that heavy rains eroded the hillside the castle is built upon, causing its collapse.
